Did you know? “In 1962, a group of designers and art directors came together to champion creative communications, while at the same time seeking to set a new, higher benchmark for the creative industries. In 1963, the first D&AD awards show was judged by a panel of 25 who assessed the 2500 entries. One Black Pencil was awarded (to Geoffrey Jones Films) and 16 Yellow Pencils.

In the early years, winners received an ebony pencil box designed by Marcello Minale, one of the founding partners of Minale Tattersfield. The box contained a pencil with silver lettering. It was a beautiful and delicate object, but in 1966 Lou Klein designed a more durable replacement—the world famous, and highly sought-after, Yellow Pencil.”
